Mary Ann Redmond Band Bio Page
Describing Mary Ann as "an exciting vocal talent," Billboard magazine noted that, ... Redmond is wowing club audiences as a completely formed stylist, who can sing heartfelt ballads and funky tunes with equal ease and enthusiasm in an alto voice that soars effortlessly to soprano range." Further recognition came just weeks later, when she was awarded the first of nine prestigious "Whammy" awards. In November of 1995, Mary Ann received five Wammies, for Best Female Vocalist in the categories of Blues, Rock/Pop, Roots Rock/R&B, Urban Contemporary, as well as recognition for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
Redmond studied voice at Virginia Commonwealth University, while also performing in nightclubs in and around Richmond. After three years she went on the road, playing clubs up and down the east coast in Top-40 dance/show bands such as Oasis, Airplay, and Tough Act to Follow, eventually working as a featured act at Atlantic City's Trump Plaza in 1989.
Since then Mary Ann has been writing songs and pursuing a recording career. She worked with producer Jim Steinman (songwriter for the legendary Meatloaf) on the album "Vision Thing" by the Sisters of Mercy. In October of 1994, "Prisoner Of The Heart," her own CD, was released. This recording has received critical acclaim and airplay on jazz, rock and contemporary stations.
